Loving God
Scripture Reading: John 4:20-26
Studying what the Bible teaches about worship, helped me to understand more and more the importance of having a passion for God. Not only is loving God passionately the right thing to do, but it is also necessary if we are going to be free from the love of the world and our addiction to sin.
Thomas Chalmers said it this way: “The love of the world cannot be removed by a mere demonstration of the world’s worthlessness. The only way to dispossess the heart of an old affection is by the expulsive power of a new affection. We know of no other way by which to keep the love of the world out of our hearts than to keep in our hearts the love of God.”
Not even the threatening of God are enough to free man from the tyranny of sin. Man, if he is to be free from the love of the world, must have a passionate love for God. Victory comes when we can say to God, “Father, I desire this sin, but I desire You more than I desire this sin. So, I will refuse the evil that I might have You.”
In the beatitudes Jesus Said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Our intimacy with God depends upon our purity of heart. When we desire intimacy with God more than anything else we will reject sin. A worshipper is one who passionately desires God. And therefore, he is also one who experiences victory over the love of the world, because his heart is in love with God.
