Mary's Magnificat
Scripture Reading: Luke 1:46-55
This song of Mary has been titled “Magnificat,” meaning “my soul magnifies the Lord.” It tells us a lot about Mary, and what it tells us in astonishing when you consider her young age. In this song, Mary quotes Old Testament Scriptures from places like Psalm 22, 44, and 103. She puts in some from 1 Samuel as well. It shows us that she was saturated with Scriptures.
It reveals her humility (“for he has looked upon the humble estate of his servant,” verse 48).
She has a grateful heart (“he who is mighty has done great things for me,” verse 49).
She has faith (throughout the song she speaks of what the Messiah would do as if it were already done).
It is no wonder that God chose a young woman like Mary to be the mother of the Christ.
