Mighty Men
Scripture Reading: 1 Chronicles 11-12; Acts 7; Psalm 3
“Now these are the chiefs of David’s mighty men, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.” - 1 Chronicles 11:10
David didn’t rise to the throne alone. God called him, anointed him, and shaped him—but He also surrounded David with a band of loyal, courageous, and faith-filled warriors. These were not perfect men. Some were outsiders, misfits, and even fugitives. Yet they were drawn to David because they recognized God's hand on him.
1 Chronicles 11–12 tells their stories. Men who risked everything to bring David water from Bethlehem (11:15–19). Warriors who joined him while he was still in hiding. Leaders from every tribe who came “with a loyal heart” to make David king “according to the word of the LORD” (12:38).
These men model something for us: David was God’s anointed king. He was a type or a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ. These men help us to see what it means to give strong support to Christ. To be a mighty man of God means to stand firm in dark times, and to unite for a purpose bigger than ourselves.
Just like David’s mighty men, we too are called to a greater King. Jesus Christ, the Son of David, still gathers people to Himself—not because we are mighty, but because He is. He gives us a part to play in His kingdom. He takes the weak and makes them strong. He calls the outsider and gives them a place at His side.
