Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 9
“Let no the wise man glory in his wisdom; let not the mighty man glory in his might; nor the rich man glory in his riches; but let him who glories glory in this; that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth.” -Jeremiah 9:23-24
Typical of humankind our culture encourages us to boast about and take pride in our financial, intellectual, and physical achievements. Hollywood is a caricature of our national psyche with their constant self-aggrandizement through one award show after another. On a much smaller scale, most people pursue the recognition and praise of others by parading their physical beauty or prowess, social status and wealth, intellectual achievements, or all of the above.
But how many people do you know today that are bragging about knowing Jesus? How many of us think the greatest thing we could tell someone else about ourselves is that we have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? Well, if you want something to boast about and glory in that would be it. Let’s follow the admonition of God this week. Let’s commit this week to not boasting about anything except Jesus Christ. Maybe after a week, it will become a habit for life and we will be able to say with Paul: “God forbid that I should glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
