My God
Scripture Reading: Matthew 27:46
Jesus, when speaking to God, always called Him “Father.” There are two notable exceptions to this in Scripture. One of those exceptions is our text today. The other is found in the book of Hebrews where it tells us what the Son was saying as He was coming into the world: “I come to do thy will, O God.” In both cases, it can be said that the use of “God” in place of “Father” is significant and meaningful.
In both cases, Jesus is speaking in His role as our substitute. He is standing in our place. In Hebrews, He represents us and does what we are unable to do because of our fallen nature. He comes to perfectly obey God, doing His will in every respect. He comes to provide a righteousness we are incapable of providing for ourselves.
On the cross, He stands in our place as well. He undertakes and endures the God-forsakenness that we rightly deserve. He goes through hell for us.
Jesus provides the “double cure.” He saves us from wrath and makes us pure.
