My Suffering
your boldness
Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:12-18
Philippians is one of Paul’s “prison letters.” It has been said that the theme of the book is joy, and that is not without merit. Paul talks a lot about joy and what the enemies, true source, and true nature of joy are in this letter. In the first chapter, Paul opens up about his suffering and the trial he was enduring.
In our Scripture reading this morning, he points out that what was meant to harm him has had, instead, some very positive outcomes. He was able to spread the gospel among the imperial guard. The gospel was being more boldly preached because of his suffering. It seems his imprisonment had the opposite effect intended by those persecuting him.
In verse fourteen Paul says, “Most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.” This raises an interesting question: How does one man's suffering for his faith cause other men to become bold and fearless in their faith?
I won’t pretend to know the psychology behind that phenomenon. I do know that when one man shows courage it inspires other men to be courageous as well. Of course, the opposite could happen. When Jesus was arrested, the disciples all fled in fear. Nevertheless, there is a powerful influence that can be experienced when we are bold in our faith.
You may have seen the movie “Glory” and remember the final scene. The Captain says something like, “If this man falls, who will pick up the colors?” He was referring to the flag they would carry into battle. There is a moment of hesitation, and then someone says, “I will.” It inspires others to do likewise.
May we all live with the kind of spiritual courage that inspires others to be fearlessly bold in their faith.
