Ne Plus Ultra
Plus Ultra!
Scripture Reading: Philippians 3:12-15
When Spain had control over both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar, there was a large marker that was called the “Pillar of Hercules.” Before Columbus’ voyage in 1492, the Pillar of Hercules had an inscription in Latin; “Ne Plus Ultra.” Translated, it means “No more beyond.” It was widely thought that this point marked all that there was. There was nothing beyond that point.
After Columbus’ voyage proved the error of that thinking, a new outlook developed. This new thinking was commemorated on coinage with the revised Latin Phrase, “Plus Ultra,” or “More Beyond.”
This is the spirit of Christian living. We never think “no more beyond,” but always believe there is more – more ministry, more growth, more of Christ, more of the fulness of the Spirit, more righteousness…And so, we press onward and upward in Christ Jesus.
