Nevertheless
Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 20-21; Psalm 73
Psalm 73 captures the soul struggle of Asaph. Like many of us, he wrestled with the feeling that life wasn’t fair. He had committed himself to living a godly life, yet he faced hardship while the wicked seemed to prosper. They were healthy, wealthy, and living their best life now—while he struggled.
This wasn’t just an intellectual dilemma for Asaph; it was a crisis of faith. He confesses, “My feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” His envy nearly led him to despair.
But everything changed when he entered the temple. There, in the presence of God, his perspective shifted. He saw that earthly success is fleeting, and Judgment Day is coming. God will set everything right.
In all of this, one word stands out—"Nevertheless."
After Asaph acknowledges his own bitterness and ignorance, after he admits he was like a beast before God, he says:
Nevertheless, he was still with God.
Nevertheless, God was holding his right hand.
Nevertheless, God was guiding his life.
Nevertheless, God would receive him into glory.
His realization is summed up in verse 26:
"My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
We all face seasons of struggle. And sometimes, we don’t endure them like heroic saints full of unwavering faith. Sometimes, we come across as bitter, brutish, and broken. But thank God, we can still say with Asaph: "Nevertheless."
Nevertheless, God remains faithful.
Nevertheless, He holds us and guides us all the way home.
My life has been a journey of a thousand stumbles. But by God’s grace, every fall lands me in the strong arms of Jesus Christ.

Praise be to God!
Amen
