No Reason
Scripture Reading: Job 1 – 2
Satan believes about men what is true of himself. He thinks people are only in it for themselves. He is convinced all people are egocentric. Satan makes the charge that the only reason Job worships and serves the living God is because God protects and prospers him. He uses the rhetorical question, “Does Job fear God for nothing?” as his line of attack. It gets the sense that he doesn’t think he is wrong here.
The Lord had confidence in Job. He knew Job’s heart. He knew Satan’s accusation was misguided. Satan believed what he was saying. He believed it about Job because it was true of his own heart. His only concern is himself.
Someone once said, “Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself. It is thinking about yourself less.” Satan only thinks of himself. He exalts himself. He serves himself. He does everything for himself. He assumes all men do too.
Jesus is of a different nature altogether. He humbled himself and became obedient, even unto death, the death of the cross. He laid down His life for His friends.
Life will test us. God will test us. If in those tests it is revealed that we worship and serve God for nothing, it will show how much closer we have come to Christlikeness. It will demonstrate the amazing work of God’s grace and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in us that our hearts are set free from the captivity to self. It will show that we are more and more like Christ, and less and less like the devil.
