Our Prayer Partner
Scripture Reading: Romans 8:26
Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
What Paul says here about our praying, “we do not know what to pray…” is universally true. Even our best prayers fall short of expressing what we want to say or ought to say. Our prayers are crippled by our ignorance and hindered by our unbelief. We wish they would fly toward the heavens and burst into the throne of God with power, but they barely make it past our lips before we see how inadequate and weak they are. They are weak because we are weak.
It would be hopeless if we were left to our own devices. Thankfully, we are not left to ourselves. The Spirit of God Himself intercedes. He interprets, not simply our words, but our spirit. He knows our heart’s deepest longings and desires and brings them before the Father. He stands beside us as we come before the throne of grace and says, “What he is trying to say is…”
Go ahead and pray those prayers that you know are not saying what you are trying to say. Pray out of your weakness. Feel free to struggle to say what you want to say. Even pray when you don’t know what to pray. The Holy Spirit will be your translator. He will take what you are trying to pray and pray it perfectly on your behalf.
