Overflowing Laughter
Scripture Reading: Psalm 126:2
“Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy.”
It’s often said, “Laughter is the best medicine.” And while that’s probably true, not all laughter springs from the same source. There’s the empty laughter of mockery or amusement, laughter driven by foolishness, and laughter that fills a quiet room after a good joke. But the laughter Psalm 126 describes is altogether different.
This laughter is a heart’s cry—a joy so deep and unexpected that it erupts uncontainably, spilling into words and shouts of joy. The Israelites had been through a long period of captivity, and their joy at God’s deliverance was almost too wonderful to believe. Their laughter wasn’t just happiness; it was the overflow of God’s grace pouring out from their souls, a response to the goodness of God filling their lives to the brim.
As believers, we too have experienced this grace in Christ, who is our source of ultimate joy. When we truly grasp the depth of what He’s done, laughter and joy overflow—not because of fleeting things, but because we are loved, redeemed, and filled with hope. Let’s remember that Jesus gives us a reason to laugh, filling our hearts with a joy that, like the psalmist's, overflows with gratitude and delight.
