Scripture Reading: Psalm 123
To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens! Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he has mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt. Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.
The Psalmist looks into the heavens and remembers that God is God. He is reigning from His throne. Doing so also puts his thoughts about himself in order. He sees himself as a servant.
But he is not an abused servant of a harsh taskmaster. He is a servant of the One True and powerful God, but this God who reigns over everything knows His servants and cares for them.
He is dependent on the Lord, but he also belongs to the Lord. He is under His care.
Seeing himself this way makes the contempt and scorn of the world seem less significant than it otherwise would.
Putting our life in perspective, and seeing how it relates to the Lord, both humbles and helps us.
