Rage Against God
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 19:3
When a man’s folly brings his way to ruin, his heart rages against the LORD.
We, humans, have this odd proclivity to credit ourselves for every good that comes our way and blame God for every evil that befalls us. This proverb is a simple acknowledgment of the second half of that issue.
A person acts foolishly. They suffer the consequences of that foolishness. Then, they rage against God, if not outwardly, in their heart.
The wisdom here is to recognize this tendency of our sinful hearts and battle against it. That requires humility and honesty. That requires us to accept responsibility for the actions that we took, the decisions we made, and the attitudes we developed that led to our ruin.
Rather than blame God for not miraculously giving us a soft landing after we jumped off the cliff, we should confess how foolish it was to take that leap in the first place. Yes, sometimes God shows us mercy and delivers us from the consequences of our folly. But when God chooses to let us suffer the fate of our folly, it is only further folly to rage against the LORD.
