Rash
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 20:25
It is a snare to say rashly, “It is holy,” and to reflect only after making vows.
I think this proverb is particularly directed toward those who have personal integrity. It has in view people who desire to keep their commitments and want their word to be their bond. If a person doesn’t care whether they do what they say or not, then it probably doesn’t have much application. That kind of person has other issues to deal with before they take this one up.
But, if you are the kind of person who wants to be “a man of your word,” (or woman) then this is a proverb you should take to heart. The point being made is that we shouldn’t make commitments before we think them through. This is especially true when it pertains to spiritual issues.
This is not meant to suggest that we should never commit to anything. It is only meant to say that before we make a vow, give it some thought and reflection. Don’t jump into things without counting the cost. Therefore, be cautious around people who use manipulating tactics to get you to commit to something. If someone is pressuring you to “decide now,” you might want to back away. If you are being driven solely by emotion, you might want to step back and reflect for a minute.
Don’t be rash.
