Refusing Advice
and what that might mean
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 15:12
A scoffer does not like to be reproved; he will not go to the wise.
There is a reason why some people don’t take advice well. There is a reason why some people never seek for or ask for other people’s opinions. They don’t like to be corrected. They avoid wise people because wise people will tell them the truth, and sometimes the truth hurts. It is a character issue. In Proverbs, this kind of person is called “a scoffer.”
Because it is a character issue, that is an issue of the soul, it isn’t as simple as just changing one’s actions. In other words, it is not enough to read this as advice on getting advice. It is revealing a heart issue and that requires confession and repentance. It is something deeper than just making poor choices out of ignorance. Pride has taken root in the heart and the ax needs to be laid to the root.
