Repetition is Good
Scripture Reading: Psalm 94; Isaiah 52-56; Philippians 3
Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe. -Philippians 3:1 -
At first glance it would appear that Paul arguing that writing the same things again is not tedious for him and safe for the Philippian believers is out of place in the whole tenor of the book. What does he mean here, and why is he saying this?
Paul is recognizing a principle of life that we would do well to recall as well – repetition is good for us. It is not that we forget foundational truths, although I suppose we can. It is that we can drift away from them if we don’t get constant reminders of them.
By repeating foundational truths of the gospel and the Christian life, Paul is demonstrating pastoral love and care for the church. He is protecting them from the dangers of drifting.
So, this Lord’s Day, if your pastor is preaching and teaching on something you have heard a thousand times before, don’t let that frustrate you. Thank him for it. When you partake of the Lord’s Supper, be grateful for the reminder of what Jesus has done for you.
It is not, or it least it should not be, tedious for your church leaders to remind you of things you already know. And it is for your protection.
There is too much in this world, too much the devil is doing, too much our own sinful hearts desire that pulls us away from our moorings in Christ. We need these reminders and we need to be grateful for them.
