Responding to God
Scripture Reading: Psalm 27:8
You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face LORD, do I seek.”
Years ago, this verse caught my attention and I set out to make it a verse to memorize. In it we find a principle of how life should be lived. God calls and commands and we respond from the heart. It is interesting to note that when the Psalmist wrote, “You have said,” the way it was written it is a general calling. In one sense, it is not spoken directly and solely to the Psalmist. It is a call that goes out to everyone.
Theologians refer to this as the “general call of God.” It is akin to Isaiah 6 where the Lord asks, “Who will go for us?” It is like Jesus saying, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst,” (John 6:35).
While the call of God goes out generally, it must, if it is to matter to us, be answered individually from the heart. God says, “Seek my face,” but we must respond with a personal response, “You face Lord, do I seek.” The call goes out, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved,” (Acts 16:31); and now we must respond from the heart, “Lord, I believe.”
