Shipwrecks
and how to avoid them
Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 1:18-19
"This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made a shipwreck of their faith."
During a recent trip to Madagascar, we had the privilege of visiting the African Mercy Ship. While on board, a young crew member explained the navigational tools vital for safely guiding the ship from port to port. Without these tools, the ship could easily veer off course and risk destruction on the rocks.
Paul uses this metaphor to describe how faith and a good conscience guide the believer. “Faith” here is our trust in Christ and adherence to sound doctrine, while a “good conscience” means living with integrity before God. Together, they are the tools that keep us on a safe path.
Rejecting either one leads to spiritual ruin, like a shipwreck. Those who abandon sound doctrine or compromise integrity drift into dangerous waters. Paul warns Timothy—and us—to “wage the good warfare,” maintaining these spiritual tools.
Satan aims to shipwreck our faith by enticing us to let go of these essentials. So, as you navigate life’s journey, hold firmly to faith and a good conscience. Let them be the compass that keeps you steady, ensuring you reach the destination God has prepared for you.
