Scripture Reading: Proverbs 18:2
A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.
Solomon wasn’t on Twitter or Facebook, but this verse seems to have been written for just such a medium like social media. Twitter and Facebook are full of fools. I’m amazed at how people feel the need to weigh in on everything they see there. Occasionally, when I want to torture myself, I will read the comments on ads that show up on my Facebook feed. Most often the comments thread is one long litany of criticisms and complaints. And often the complaints are not from customers of the product that is being sold, it is just people who pick apart the idea, the way it was presented, or even the looks of the person who is pictured in the ad. It is as though they sit around and ask themselves, “who can I rip on today?”
People who listen to understand are rare. Even rarer are those who take pleasure in understanding. Those that don’t try to understand and don’t take pleasure in understanding are fools. They believe the only thing that matters is getting their opinion out. They are listening – rather they are waiting for the other person to stop talking – so they can talk and let everyone know what they think.
Don’t be a fool. Listen to understand.
