Sufficient
Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 3:5-6
We are insufficient for the work entrusted to us by God. It doesn’t matter what the specifics of that work are. Husband, Wife, Mother, Father, teacher, student…you can add the word “insufficient” in front of every role, job, position, or work you are called to.
Why would God call us to things He knows full well we are insufficient for?
It is God’s method of overcoming our stubborn, prideful independence. “God made us for Himself,” Augustine said. He didn’t mean God designed us as an army of servile slaves over which He eternally cracks a divine whip. He meant that God made us to be partners with Him in His work in this world.
We are insufficient in ourselves for that work, but we are sufficient for it by God’s grace. We are not under the burden of motivationally driven “you can do it” self-help drivel. We do not need another pep talk. We are called to live and “I can do all things through Christ” God-sufficiency life of faith.
We are sufficient when we find our sufficiency in Christ alone.
