The Blessing
Scripture Reading: Numbers 6-7; Psalm 52
In the ancient wilderness, the words of Numbers 6:22–27 were spoken by Aaron and his sons—a priestly blessing that sealed God’s promise of protection and favor upon His people. This blessing, with its evocative language of God’s face shining upon them, was a tangible reminder that God was with Israel every step of their journey. In its original setting, it underscored the special mediation of the Aaronic priesthood, set apart for a people called to live in holiness.
Now, as we reflect in the light of the New Covenant, that same blessing finds a renewed and even more profound expression in Christ. The New Testament teaches us that Jesus is our one true mediator (1 Timothy 2:5), our Great High Priest who intercedes on our behalf (Hebrews 4:14–16). Through His sacrifice, every believer is invited into the intimate presence of God—a community united as a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9).
As you consider this passage, allow yourself to see beyond the ancient ritual to the transformative reality of the gospel. Notice how the blessing that once flowed only through the designated priests now flows through our Lord Jesus Christ. Every word—“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you”—points not to a human authority but to the gracious, radiant presence of God, now accessible to all who believe.
Remember that while pastors and church leaders may pronounce words of blessing this Lord’s Day, they do so as instruments pointing us to Christ, the true and eternal mediator. Their role is not to stand above you but to guide you into the heart of God’s promise. Also, consider how this new reality means that you, too, share in that priestly calling. You have direct access to God’s presence and are empowered to extend His love, encouragement, and grace to others in your community.
Today, ask yourself in what ways can you experience the personal, unmediated blessing of God in your daily life? How might embracing your role as part of a “royal priesthood” change the way you interact with others in your church and community? What practical steps can you take to ensure that every blessing you receive or give always points back to Christ?
Lord Jesus, thank You for bridging the gap between the ancient covenant and the New Covenant. Help me to embrace the truth that I am part of Your royal priesthood—invited to access Your presence freely and to share Your blessing with others. May every word of blessing be a reminder of Your enduring love and intercession in my life. In Your holy name, Amen.

Great message, blessing indeed!!
