The Child and the Son
a December series on how the Old Testament points us to Jesus Christ
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 9:6
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given."
The Scriptures are stunningly precise when we take time to notice the details. Isaiah 9:6 is a prime example. At first glance, the phrases “For unto us a child is born” and “unto us a Son is given” might seem like mere repetition. But when we slow down and reflect, we uncover a treasure of meaning.
These words beautifully reveal the dual nature of Jesus Christ—His humanity and His divinity. He is the God-Man, the One in whom heaven and earth meet. In Him exists the hypostatic union—a theological term describing how Jesus is fully God and fully man, united in one Person.
Consider this: as the eternal Son of God, Jesus has always existed. He is the second Person of the Trinity, infinite and uncreated. His divine nature could not be “born,” for God has no beginning. But in time, He took on human flesh. He became a man, born as a child in Bethlehem.
With this understanding, Isaiah 9:6 comes alive. The phrase “unto us a child is born” speaks to Jesus’ humanity. He entered our world, wrapped in swaddling cloths, breathing earthly air. Yet, the next phrase, “unto us a Son is given,” points to His divinity. The eternal Son wasn’t born—He was given. Heaven’s greatest gift came down for us.
It’s remarkable, isn’t it? Such profound truths tucked into a single verse! It reminds us that every word of Scripture matters. Behind every phrase lies a depth that speaks of God’s infinite wisdom and His love for us.
Take a moment today to marvel at the Child who was born for you and the Son who was given to you. Rejoice in the mystery of the God-Man, our Savior and King.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son. Thank You for sending Him to be born as a child, to live among us, and to bring us back to You. Help me to see the richness of Your Word and the wonder of Your plan. Teach me to rest in the truth of who Jesus is—fully God, fully man, and completely for me. Amen.

Amen. Thank you for your perspective brother.
