The Cross
by James Denney
This week , as we approach Resurrection Sunday, I am sharing excerpts from other writers centered on the cross…
It the atonement, quite apart from precise definitions of it, is anything to the mind it is everything. It is the most profound of all truths and the most creative. It determines more than anything else our conception of God, of man, of history, and even of nature. It determines them, for we must bring them all in some way into accord with it. It is the inspiration of all thought, the key in the last resort of all suffering. The atonement is a reality of such a sort that it can make no compromise. For the modern mind, therefore, as the ancient, the attraction and the repulsion of Christianity are concentrated at the same point. The Cross of Christ is man’s only glory or it is his final stumbling block.
