The Higher Rock
Scripture Reading: Numbers 26-27; Mark 13; Psalm 61
David prayed a beautiful prayer, a prayer that might resonate with you at certain times throughout life, in Psalm 61:2, “Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.” While it is only a small part of the whole psalm, it is the part that glistens like a poetic diamond to most readers. As evidence for that I would point to the Bible from which I am reading right now that includes “Lead me to the Rock” as the title to the Psalm.
It is a wonderful phrase, worthy of contemplating its implications. Let me briefly mention a few and leave it up to you to enlarge upon these thoughts:
We must be led to Christ. We are seekers who need a Guide in God. Thank God for His Spirit. He has come to be such a guide to us. This is a prayer we can be confident God will answer.
I took the liberty to capitalize Rock. The text itself doesn’t do so. But I believe I am right to think that the Rock David was seeking was Christ. John says that Jesus was the Rock that provided water in the wilderness. He is the Rock of refuge as well.
Like David, we need a Rock that is higher than ourselves. We aren’t good enough, strong enough, wise enough, or holy enough. We need some other ground on which to stand. That ground, that Rock, is Jesus.
When we get on high ground we gain perspective as well as protection. Not only is it safer on higher ground, things become more clear. We see better. In Jesus we are given spiritual safety and sight.
Maybe this is a prayer you need today. Pray it with David. Expect in faith that God will answer.

I've been following along since the beginning of the year brother, and have to say thank you for these short devotions. They not only have led to a great daily habit, but they (sometimes unbeknownst to me at the time) have set my perspective higher, as you mention here, and often painfully so. It's often tough to see yourself in scripture as the Children of Israel, never satisfied with God alone; or even the demoniac, who is in need of great healing and peace. But God....look to Christ. Be encouraged today, you are appreciated.
