Scripture Reading: Joshua 10; Luke 9; Psalm 84
Blessed are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion. — Psalm 84:5 (ESV)
Every journey has a destination. Some walk the road of ambition, others the path of comfort, but the blessed ones—the truly happy ones—are those whose hearts are set on Zion. Their journey is not just about reaching a place but about walking toward the presence of God, step by step, day by day.
The psalmist speaks of highways in the heart, a striking image. A highway is a well-traveled road, a path intentionally built for movement toward a destination. This is no meandering trail but a direct and steadfast course. What does it mean to have highways to Zion in our hearts? It means that deep within, there is a longing for God, a well-worn path of trust, worship, and obedience that leads us ever closer to Him. It means that no matter where we are physically, our hearts are always pointed home—to God’s presence, to the place where true joy and peace are found.
But we do not make this journey in our own strength. The first part of the verse reminds us: Blessed are those whose strength is in You. God Himself sustains us as we travel. The road may lead through valleys of difficulty and hills of hardship, but those who walk with God will find their strength renewed. As Isaiah 40:31 reminds us, “those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles.”
Perhaps today your road feels long. Perhaps the valleys seem deep, and the climb steep. Take heart! The highways to Zion are not just roads of longing; they are roads of promise. For every step we take toward God, He is already near. Our journey’s end is not uncertain—it is secure in Christ, who is Himself the way to the Father (John 14:6).
Father, set my heart on the highways to Zion. Let my greatest desire be to dwell in Your presence and walk in Your ways. When I grow weary, be my strength. When I face obstacles, remind me of the joy of knowing You. Keep my heart on the road home—to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Praise be to God what a blessing
Amen—so encouraging!
