The Humble King
a December series on how the Old Testament points us to Christ
Scripture Reading: Micah 5:2
"But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days."
Micah 5:2 is a remarkable prophecy that pinpoints the birthplace of the Messiah centuries before His coming. Bethlehem, a small and seemingly insignificant town, is chosen by God to be the origin of the eternal King. It is a reminder of how God works—choosing the humble and lowly to bring about His greatest purposes.
This prophecy was fulfilled in Jesus Christ, whose birth in Bethlehem is recorded in Matthew 2:1-6. Jesus, the eternal Son of God, is described here as having a "coming forth... from ancient days," a reference to His divine nature and preexistence (John 1:1-2). He is the promised ruler who will shepherd His people, not with oppression but with grace, truth, and peace.
The choice of Bethlehem also underscores the nature of God’s kingdom. It is not built on human power or prestige but on humility and dependence on God. Jesus, born in a stable in Bethlehem, grew up to teach and embody this upside-down kingdom, where the last are first, and the meek inherit the earth.
As we reflect on this prophecy, we are reminded that no person or place is too small for God’s redemptive purposes. Just as He used Bethlehem to bring forth the Savior, He can use our lives, no matter how insignificant we may feel, to display His glory.
