The Logic of Contentment
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 13:5-6
For the Christian, contentment is logical. It makes sense. If the Lord “will never leave us nor forsake us,” it just makes sense to be content. We are not walking this road alone. We need not fear abandonment. We don’t have to hoard, as if we might end up destitute if we don’t.
This doesn’t negate other Scriptures that teach about the wisdom of saving and preparing for the future. Contentment isn’t about the checkbook balance. It is attitudinal. You can be rich and discontent, poor and discontent, rich and content, or poor and content. Contented people and discontented people are found across all social and economic strata.
The secret to contentment is faith that the promise of the Lord is true. He really will stay with us all the way. It just makes sense, in light of that truth to be content.
