The Mediator
Scripture Reading: Job 9:33
Here are some various translations of this verse:
There is no arbiter between us, who might lay his hand on us both. (ESV)
If only there were someone to mediate between us, someone to bring us together. (NIV)
There is no umpire between us, that might lay his hands on us both. (NASB 1977)
There is no one to judge between us, to lay his hand on both of us. (HCSB)
Arbiter, mediator, umpire, judge… Job’s distress was in the realization that God was so great that no one existed who could represent his case before the Lord. While it isn’t likely that Job was thinking in Messianic terms, what he desired has come to pass. Jesus Christ is the Mediator between God and man. Because He is God and man he is the one person who has ever lived, the only person who has ever lived, capable of standing before the bar of God to represent man.
Praise God.
