The Righteous Branch
a December series on how the Old Testament points us to Christ
Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 23:5-6
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’”
Jeremiah’s prophecy unfolds in a dark time for Judah, where the leadership of kings and priests has failed, and the people are scattered like sheep without a shepherd. But even in the midst of judgment, God promises hope: a righteous Branch from the line of David who will reign as a perfect King.
This "Branch" points directly to Jesus Christ, who fulfills this prophecy as the true King in David’s lineage. Unlike the flawed and sinful kings of Israel and Judah, Jesus rules with perfect wisdom, justice, and righteousness. His reign brings salvation—not just for Judah and Israel, but for all who trust in Him.
Significantly, Jesus is called “The Lord is our righteousness.” This name reveals the heart of the gospel: we cannot achieve righteousness on our own, but Christ becomes our righteousness (1 Corinthians 1:30). Through His life, death, and resurrection, He secures salvation and peace for His people, granting us His perfect righteousness in exchange for our sin.
As we celebrate the advent of Christ, Jeremiah 23:5-6 reminds us of the security and hope we have in our King. In Him, we find not only salvation but a righteous reign that will one day restore all things.
Let this prophecy draw your heart to worship the King who reigns in righteousness and secures your salvation.

AMEN!! Thank you!!
