The Rod that Budded
Scripture Reading: Numbers 16-18; Psalm 57
One of the most fascinating things about the Bible is how often God uses moments of rebellion, distress, and judgment as opportunities to point us to the gospel and to Jesus. Again and again, we see that even in the darkest moments, God is at work, revealing His plan of salvation. Here are a few examples:
Joseph’s betrayal – His brothers’ treachery foreshadowed Christ’s own rejection. Joseph, beloved by his father, was handed over to Gentiles, thought to be lost, but later exalted to a position of power—where he became the very one who saved his brothers.
Israel’s grumbling in the wilderness – Their complaints led to God providing manna from heaven and water from a rock, both of which the New Testament identifies as types of Christ (John 6:31-35; 1 Corinthians 10:4).
Jonah’s rebellion – His time in the belly of the great fish became the supreme sign of Jesus’ own death and resurrection (Matthew 12:39-40).
Numbers 17 gives us another powerful picture. The context is Israel’s continued rebellion against Moses and Aaron’s leadership. In response, God sent a plague, which only stopped when Aaron interceded through atonement. But to remove all doubt about who His chosen priest was, God gave the elders of Israel a test.
Each tribe was to place a staff—essentially a walking stick—into the tent of meeting, with the name of their leader inscribed on it. By morning, the staff that budded with new life would indicate God’s chosen priest.
The next day, Moses retrieved the staffs. Eleven remained lifeless, but Aaron’s staff, from the tribe of Levi, had not only budded but also blossomed and produced almonds.
How does this point to Christ?
After the crucifixion, Jesus’ body was laid in a tomb—lifeless, like a dead staff. The rulers of the day—Pilate, the Pharisees, the Sanhedrin, Herod, and even Satan himself—believed they had silenced Him forever.
But God…
Just as He demonstrated His choice of Aaron through a miraculous sign of life, He declared Jesus to be His chosen Messiah by raising Him from the dead. The resurrection was God’s unmistakable proof that Jesus is the true and only High Priest through whom salvation comes.
Jesus is the staff that budded with life.
Where there was death, God brought resurrection. Where there was rebellion, God provided redemption. And where there was doubt, God gave undeniable proof.
May we trust in the risen Christ, the One who brings life out of death, and worship Him as our eternal High Priest.
