The True Vine and True Son
Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 33-34; Joshua 1; Luke 7; Psalm 80
“Turn again, O God of hosts! Look down from heaven, and see; have regard for this vine, the stock that your right hand planted, and for the son whom you made strong for yourself.” – Psalm 80:14-15
Israel was God’s chosen vine, planted to bear fruit for His glory. But as Psalm 80 laments, the vine had been ravaged, broken, and burned. The people cried out for restoration, pleading for God to regard “the son” whom He had raised up.
In John 15, Jesus declares, “I am the true vine.” He is the fulfillment of Israel’s calling—the faithful and fruitful Son through whom life flows. Where Israel failed, Jesus succeeded. Where the vine of old withered, Christ remains ever-living.
But this truth doesn’t just apply to Israel’s history. It applies to us. We were lifeless, cut off from God. Yet through Christ, the true vine, we are grafted in (Romans 11:17-18), nourished, and strengthened to bear fruit that lasts.
Psalm 80’s cry for restoration finds its answer in Jesus. He is the Son God made strong for Himself, the One through whom we are revived. If we remain in Him, He will make us flourish. Abide in Him and be fruitful once again.
