This I Know
Scripture Reading: Numbers 15; Mark 10; Psalm 56
The Psalmist declared, “This I know, that God is for me.” (Psalm 56:9)
This is a bold declaration—one we might long to say with confidence, especially in times of distress and trouble. But how can we be sure it’s true? If we’re honest, we might sometimes wonder if God is really for us. After all, our own sin gives Him every reason to be against us. And what about when our suffering is the result of our own choices?
Rather than making an immediate, personal application, let’s first see this as the testimony of Jesus. In His incarnation, Jesus experienced suffering, rejection, sorrow, and ultimately, death. Every tear He shed was seen and treasured by His Father. He knew, beyond a doubt, that His Father was for Him—and that was supremely demonstrated in the resurrection. Even in the face of death, Jesus embodied perfect trust in His Father.
So how can we, like the Psalmist, pray with confidence, “This I know, that God is for me”? Take a moment to read Romans 8. There, Paul expresses the same truth: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). But this assurance is not based on our merit or righteousness. It is rooted in the gospel—our union with Christ, the forgiveness of sins in Him, and our full acceptance before God through His death and resurrection.
God is for us because He is for Christ. And if we are in Christ, then we can say with full assurance:
“This I know, that God is for me.”
