Thoughtful Trust
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 16:20
Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.
Some people have the idea that when a Christian talks about faith they mean you put your brain in neutral. Revelation trumps reason but faith doesn’t kill it. What I mean is, we should submit our reason to God’s revelation, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t think, question, and wrestle with truth. We can both question and trust.
This proverb encourages thoughtful reading of the word. God has a way of placing the best stuff beneath the surface. Silver, gold, and diamonds all have to be mined from beneath the surface of the earth. The deeper truths of God are mostly discovered and uncovered through prayerful study and thoughtful meditation on the word of God. Therefore, the person who thinks discovers good.
I appreciate how this proverb also unites thinking to trusting. Discovering implies effort on our part. Trusting implies the work of God is the ultimate source of blessing. These two are not enemies in conflict with each other. We study, meditate, think, and reason while trusting and God blesses and allows us to discover good in the word.
Make it your aim to read the word, study the word, hear the word, memorize the word, and meditate on the word while trusting God to bless the effort. You will discover good as you do so. You will be blessed.
