Traveling in Fog
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 50:10
Have you ever driven through a heavy fog? I have and I don’t like it. It creates a sense of insecurity. Even when you are driving down familiar streets with landmarks you know well, they are all shrouded by misty curtains of moisture. It is disorienting. When you drive in foggy conditions you turn your lights on, not to see, but to be seen. You drive slower (I hope). Your senses are on alert because you realize you might need to react to danger quickly and without much warning. All of this is both physically and mentally draining.
There are times when we find ourselves in something of a spiritual and mental fog. Our vision is dimmed, the path is unclear, and the future is shrouded in mystery. The things you are normally most certain about are less clear. Spiritual disorientation set in.
Here are a few words of advice for those times:
Keep moving (Don’t quit now)
Slow down (It’s okay and often the wisest choice)
Keep your lights on (people often see you best when conditions are the worst)
Have faith (Those spiritual landmarks are still there even if you can’t see them)
Keep hope (The Son will soon burn away the fog and everything will be clear then)
The Christian pilgrimage is leading you to a place worth going, even if you have to travel in a fog for a short time.
