Unto Us
Scripture Reading: Luke 2:8-14
The angelic announcement of the birth of Christ seems to echo the words of Isaiah. Isaiah said, “Unto us, a child is born…” (Isaiah 9:6). Now to the shepherds the angel says, “unto you is born…a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
The angel could not say, “unto us,” as Isaiah did because Christ was born to save mankind. The angels, holy and fallen, are what they are. There is no redemption needed for the holy angels and no redemption possible or provided for the fallen.
It is full of meaning also that this message, this echo of Isaiah’s prophecy, was spoken to these lowly shepherds that night. If anyone would doubt “unto you” included them, it would be men like these. They would easily believe that the Christ would be born unto the Pharisees and the priests. But would he be born unto them? Yes, even unto them.
Christ has come to redeem the “irredeemable” among humanity. When you hear the words “unto us” I hope you would believe yourself to be one of the “us.”
