Using the Law Lawfully
Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 1:8
Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully.
The Reformers identified three main uses of the law:
Civil Use: The law helps restrain evil in society, guiding civil authorities to uphold justice and maintain order.
Theological Use: The law acts like a mirror, revealing our sin and showing our need for Christ.
Guidance for Christians: For believers, the law serves as a roadmap, guiding us to live righteously and do works that please God.
When Paul talks about "using the law lawfully," he’s reminding us that God gave the law with specific purposes in mind. It’s not a tool for salvation, but rather a way to show our need for grace. Think of the law as a mirror that reveals who we are. Just as we wouldn’t use a mirror to comb our hair, using the law as a means to earn salvation misuses its purpose.
The law, when used lawfully, leads us to grace, justice, and godly living. Let this principle guide your study of God’s word, seeing it as both revealing and instructive.
