Valiant Men
1 Samuel 31
The tragic fall of Saul and the Lord’s rejection of him is known to all Bible students. There is a lot to disparage and condemn in Saul’s life. His death came at the hands of Israel’s enemies, the Philistines, who treated the bodies of Saul and his sons with contempt, cutting off their heads and fastening them to the wall of Beth-shan. When the people of Jabesh-Gilead heard what the Philistines had done, the “valiant men” traveled all night to retrieve the bodies of Saul and his sons and bring them home to be buried.
Valiant men do what is right, even for people who may have disappointed them. Valiant men stand up against evil, even when evil was perpetrated on men who have done wrong themselves. Valiant men sacrifice their own time and energy to do what is right. Valiant men join with other valiant men to get things done. Valiant men are willing to risk their own lives for the sake of doing right by and for others. Valiant men don’t waste time making excuses, they arise and go.
Thank God for valiant men.
