Vengeance
A Saturday Story
{Saturday Stories give us some breathing room on our daily Bible Reading schedule. If you have fallen behind, this is a chance to catch up. If you are on track, this is a chance to dig a little deeper into something you read this past week. It’s also a chance for me to do what I enjoy, and I hope you find enjoyable – write. Welcome to Saturday}
In a matter of seconds, I destroyed his home, his livelihood, his work…everything but his life. Why? I’ve asked myself that question, but no answer justifies my actions. The truth is embarrassingly simple: I don’t like his kind. That’s it. Nothing more.
Spiders.
This one had built a masterpiece. His web stretched with careful precision, every strand anchored just so, every line glistening with morning dew. It was both fragile and strong, a geometric wonder shimmering in the sun. And there he sat, waiting patiently for the day’s provision to arrive.
And then I took a stick and swept it all away. A night’s work—gone in a heartbeat.
The spider, to his credit, didn’t launch an attack. He didn’t brood or scheme. He didn’t waste his short life dreaming of revenge. He simply got back to work.
That’s the wisdom of the spider: he knows his life isn’t sustained by vengeance. He won’t be fed by bitterness. He knows the only way forward is to rebuild.
And so he does.
Perhaps there’s a lesson there for us.
