Vindicated
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 50:7-9
As I noted in previous comments about Isaiah 50, this is a Messianic prophecy. It is about Jesus first. Christ was condemned by men and accused by Satan, but the One who matters – God – vindicated Him. The great vindication was the resurrection. Christ rose from the grave and thereby demonstrated His righteousness and the approval of God for His life and His redemptive sacrifice.
In this text, He challenges His accusers to draw near. “Who will declare me guilty?” He asks in verse 9. Of course, we know that the Jewish leaders did, and then Pilate acquiesced and followed suit. The Crowd cried out for Barabbas and shrieked for Jesus’ crucifixion. But before the Judge of the universe, He was justified.
All those who did condemn Him were “worn out like a garment that has been eaten up by a moth.” Pilate, the Sanhedrin, the Pharisees, Judas, the angry mob…they’ve all died and are in the grave awaiting their horrific final judgment. Jesus rose again on the third day, ascended to heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.
Satan is the accuser of the brethren. He accuses us before God night and day. He stirs up those who are antagonistic to the gospel to condemn us. Never fear, as it was with Jesus our Lord, “He who vindicates me is near.”
Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died – more than that, who was raised – who is at the right hand of God, who is interceding for us… (Romans 8:33)
