Walking in Darkness
“Who among you fears the LORD? Who obeys the voice of His Servant? Who walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD and rely upon his God.” -Isaiah 50:10-
This verse seems, at first glance, to contradict what we assume the obedient Christian life is like. We know we should fear the Lord and obey Him, but we might find the idea of walking in darkness without so much as a spark of light to be out of place. Isn’t it true that if a person has Christ they have the Light? Isn’t the Word of God a “lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path?” The answer to both questions is yes.
But there is this other side of following Christ we need to acknowledge. There are times when even the most God fearing and obedient Christians go through spiritual valleys. There are days when it seems that God is absent and we are shrouded in darkness. The truth is people who fear God and obey him may find themselves walking down a path that they can’t see into a future they don’t understand.
This is only right. Our Savior Himself, the Servant we obey, walked down the dark path of Calvary in obedience to His Father. In the midst of His darkness He cried out; “My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?” Surely, as His followers we should not expect nor should want to avoid entering His sufferings with Him. If you are walking in darkness right now and wonder what to do, trust in all that God is and rest completely in Him.
