When Winter Comes
Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 8:20
The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.
The metaphorical description of Israel’s spiritual plight in the days of Jeremiah is some of the most memorable and saddest words spoken by the prophet. God’s people had turned away from Him, nevertheless, God gave them abundant time and opportunity to repent and turn back to the Lord. Those were the days of summer and harvest.
Now winter had come and no matter how much they might have wanted the warmth of the summer and the fruit of the harvest, it was too late for that. Nothing was left for them but the cold, harsh days of judgment and wrath.
Grace and mercy are abundant with the Lord. He is slow to wrath. But we should not mistake His patience with apathy. God gives us time to repent, but He doesn’t give us forever to do so. While you have life and breath, while there is some tinge of desire to know the Lord and walk with Him, and while the door of grace remains open, seize the opportunity.
Repent and believe before the harvest is past, the summer ends and you are still not saved.
