When You are Busy
chasing God's love
Scripture Reading: Luke 10:38-42
But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care…” (v.38)
One of the most difficult, but necessary, skills to learn is the ability to say, “No.” Wisdom is not allowing the good to crowd out the best. John complained about being burned out. He had accumulated a lot of job titles at his church. His responsibilities seemed endless. Because to John it appeared that others were not shouldering their share of the work, his frustrations only intensified.
It wasn’t long until he became bitter and resentful toward his Christian friends. He had even begun to feel as though God didn’t really care about him. About to explode with negative feelings, John realized he needed to do something.
After talking with his pastor and spending some time doing a personal inventory, John realized that he had been trying to earn God’s love through his efforts. In the process he had stopped listening to the words of grace already coming from heaven through God’s Word. John didn’t stop serving, but he stopped allowing serving to crowd out listening.
