Wisdom Before Dust
30 Days in Proverbs - day 20
This may be the most beautiful passage in Proverbs. It reads like a psalm - poetry meant to be heard, lingered over, and felt. Here, Wisdom speaks not merely as advice, but as eternal reality.
Wisdom declares that she existed before creation itself - before oceans, mountains, fields, or even the first dust from which man would be formed. She was present when God established the heavens, set boundaries for the seas, and laid the foundations of the earth. Wisdom is not a product of human experience or accumulated insight. She is older than the world.
For Christians, it is impossible to miss the echoes of the New Testament. Passages like John 1 and Colossians 1 speak of Christ in strikingly similar terms: present before all things, active in creation, holding all things together. Wisdom here is not merely an attribute of God, but is presented personally and relationally, preparing us to recognize Christ as the Wisdom of God made flesh.
This matters because it humbles us. Human wisdom, even at its best, is limited and often inflated by pride. We learn much through experience, but our great temptation is to believe we no longer need God. Proverbs reminds us that true wisdom existed before our dust and will remain long after.
Yet this passage is not cold or distant. It is filled with joy. God delights in Wisdom, and Wisdom delights in God’s creation; especially in humanity. Though formed from dust, mankind bears God’s image. Wisdom finds joy in the one creature capable of receiving her, living by her, and reflecting her into the world.
Wisdom, eternal and divine, takes her place within creation; not as a force imposed upon it, but as a gift offered to those who will listen.
The chapter closes with a clear and gracious invitation: whoever finds Wisdom finds life and obtains the favor of the Lord. To reject her is to harm one’s own soul.
Jesus later speaks in the same terms: “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” What Wisdom claims in Proverbs, Christ fulfills in the gospel.
Wisdom has come down from on high. And whoever finds Him finds life.
