Scripture Reading: Mark 14:53-65
Jesus mostly does not answer any of the questions put to Him by either Pilate or Caiaphas. He is silent but not completely. From the moment of His baptism, Jesus had made His Messianic claims clear. He says nothing when the high priest presents charges related to Jesus’ statements about the temple, and He doesn’t respond to those brought before the council to testify against Him. But when Caiaphas says, “Are you the Christ?” Jesus responds.
In the Greek Caiaphas makes a statement to which a question mark is added. More literally, he said, “You are the Christ…” It is the same language Peter used in his great confession of Christ. Caiaphas doesn’t do this as a personal declaration of faith. He is, at best, simply stating what he believed Jesus’ claim to be, and at worst he was mocking what he thought Jesus’ was claiming.
It is at this point Jesus does respond. And he responds in the affirmative. He would not deny who He is. Some see in Jesus’ response a claim to divinity. He answers, “I Am,” an answer that seems to echo the Old Testament name of God. Jesus goes even further. He combines two Old Testament texts, one from Psalms and one from Daniel, to assert His divine kingship over all things. The high priest tore his clothing in response and charged Him with blasphemy.
I’m not sure he heard the last part of what Jesus said. He said that the high priest would see it. He said, “You will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power…” When would he see it? That remains to be seen. But what Jesus was telling the high priest was that He would be vindicated before his eyes.
Think about that for a moment…
It is going to be quite a moment when the man who led the charge to crucify Christ sees Him as King of kings and Lord of lords.
The Bible says that “every knee will bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord…” Even Caiaphas. Even you.
Jesus will be vindicated before the eyes of everyone who curses and mocks His name and denies His Lordship.
