Your Son
Scripture Reading: Genesis 20-22; Matthew 6; Psalm 7
Like hammer strikes driving an iron spike, each phrase pierced deeper into Abraham’s heart:
Take your son…
Your only son…
Whom you love…
Was this a moment of divine empathy or something else? Was God compassionately acknowledging Abraham’s deep love for Isaac, saying, “I know how much he means to you, and I feel your pain”? Or, since this was a test, was God deliberately making it more agonizing, as if turning a pop quiz into a doctoral examination?
Or was there something even greater unfolding?
Those familiar with the New Testament cannot help but hear an echo of John 3:16 in God’s command to Abraham:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…”
What if God’s words to Abraham were not only a test of faith but also a profound foreshadowing of His own ultimate sacrifice? Imagine the Father, speaking these words to Himself as much as to Abraham. The weight of His own decision looms in the background of the narrative—a decision that would one day change the course of history.
Take your son…
Your only son…
Whom you love…
And so, God has done for us what He asked Abraham to do: He gave His Son. Not sparing Him, not withholding Him, but delivering Him up for us all. He gave His only begotten Son so that “whoever believes in Him would not perish but have eternal life.”
As we reflect on this moment, let’s marvel at the depth of God’s love. Abraham’s test points us to the cross, where the grief of a father and the love for His children meet in perfect harmony. God did not merely ask for a demonstration of faith from Abraham; He foreshadowed His ultimate demonstration of His love for us.
Let us respond in faith, gratitude, and awe of the One who gave everything for us.

Amen and amen.
